Alfa Romeo RZ review! The Alfa Romeo SZ and RZ are two of the strangest sports cars of the 1990s. Today I'm reviewing the Alfa RZ (the convertible version of the Alfa SZ) and I'll show you the quirks and features of the Alfa RZ/SZ. I'm also going to drive the Alfa Romeo RZ and show you what it's like behind the wheel of this odd car.

  • I think there is a bit of Psychology involved in this car... Its called.. COMMITTED. You have to COMMIT to doing something. You have to COMMIT to bringing the TOP up or down. You have to COMMIT to doing things.. that youd like to do. The Design of the vehicle.. sounds like its purposeful for making people think and have them exert a bit of effort. --- And knowing how little effort people apply to the majority of their decisions involving a car.. This would be foreign to them.

  • I am guessing you had a bad day before doing this video!!! How to piss off proper motor geeks, lovers of Zagato, the Busso V6 and especially Alfisti everywhere. This is only the second time Doug, I think you missed the mark by a massive margin. The other was the dog Tesla. Give me a shout when Tesla actually make a car rather than throw it together like a McDonalds happy meal free plastic toy. If you are all American, is this a case of it being GOOD that the Alfa SZ and RZ were not sold in America!!! 1) Whatever your thoughts are Doug, this car is a design icon. If there is no understanding of the brutish looks, ok, but a simple internet search would shout that art museums and anyone within the automotive design industry crave this car, for its design. This will become a major historical icon like the Aston DB4 GT Zagato and the Jaguar XKSS. So calling a design icon "ugly", boy are you at odds with the rest of the world. 2) The Busso engine, one of the greatest V6 engines ever made, needs to be revved. So saying "it doesn't feel powerful" while driving like a 90 year old Florida resident, really!! The Busso is an engine that demands driving and is best at the 6000 revs, not crapping around at 2000 revs and relying on the torque. My Alfa 164 V6 with the same engine, red lined at 7,500 revs, but after some minor adjustments was good for 9,000 and sang like a opera. It is very sad you missed the opportunity to experience the engine driven properly. Sorry mate, you got this one ALL wrong. P.S. A car from a similar period the Dodge Viper, what was the roof like on that? :-D

  • A beautiful car, with a few quirks, like every other Alfa, or Italian car come to that. The passion of owning such a rare classic far outweighs the minor inconvenience of having to stop to put down the roof. I think you have totally missed the point of this car Doug, and you are looking at it from a 'daily drivers' point of view..

And in the morning everything would be ok...thats why its the only car with the soul...it broke itself and fix itself... • I don't know why Doug bothers to review cars like this, then proceeds to act all childish and snarky throughout the video. This is a the very definition of avant garde design and like it or hate, that's the point. It's experimental, unorthodox and extremely cutting edge. It literally looks like nothing else on the road because that's what they were going for. And while everything is subjective, the coupe is far better looking than the roadster. Are you blind man?

    DjStiv3DjStiv3Prije 3 dana
  • Okay, I love you Doug, but I feel the point of this car is kinda missed. Also, it was mostly designed by the Fiat department, not the Alfa department, to make it even weirder. First, the SZ and RZ are based on the GTV6 platform. Same platform the 75/Milano V6 was based on eventually. This platform is revered for its genius handling, engine, weight distribution, and passionate driving character. That platform went on to win many races across touring and rally cars. Even today, you go to the Neurenberg Ring in Germany, one of the preferred cars to race there is the 75. The reason nobody talks about the SZ and RZ's great driving and handling is because, well, that is because the GTV6 and 75 were already famous for it, so why talk about a given? The SZ/RZ were a promotional vehicle, as brands often do, with a high price markup, intended to provide 'attention' to the brand. Just as is done with making small production run homogenized racing cars. It was never intended to be a 'serious' production model. More like a prototype in a limited production run, using an existing platform. And this shows. It was intended to be a bit of a showpiece, which improved and extended on the handling of the GTV6 in a unique and exclusive 'extra' model. That's also why it's made out of plastic instead of metal, to save weight. Also, not very successful, and the body part fitting is, because of this, awful. It's also the reason a lot of the other features on the car are what they are. It's basically a retrofit of an existing platform, purely meant for driving pleasure. Its target audience was people that would take it to the track every now and then. Or at least, use the (italian) roads that way. But, it did what it was intended to do, the SZ and RZ are a blast to drive. Just like the GTV6 is, but even lighter (the GTV6 is already pretty light). When you see the design drawings of the car, it actually looks pretty neat. I wouldn't say pretty, but cool and agressive, like an attack dog. But because they used plastic as a body material, the edges were all rounded off, completely botching that razor sharp look, into a like a fisher-price toy car bulky mess. So yes, now agreed entirely on par that the car seems to have been the result of a drunken design bet by the design team, and somehow the intern won. From the origin design , you can see clear styling cues there originating from Giugiaro, with the Delorean and the '80s, VW Sirocco, and taking the 'truncated butt' style to the max (which was an aerodynamics feature at the time), but it all comes together very oddly with that plastic. But it did stand out. And it does go like stink around corners. Like most Alfa's, that genius platform works magic when you are through windy roads or on the track. Long straight roads with traffic lights? Not going to shine there. Experience? Driving a GTV6 from NY to San Francisco and back. Much better at home in the hilly curvy roads of Tuscany.
